Aana Avanna is a cultural platform and living archive for Sri Lankan Tamil and diaspora communities. The content we publish — including cultural guides, historical explainers, ceremony guides, home remedies and community stories — is written and reviewed with care, honesty and respect for the communities it represents.

This page explains how our content is commissioned, researched, written, reviewed and updated.

Who We Are

Aana Avanna is an independent, community-led cultural platform based in the United Kingdom. Our editorial team draws on lived experience within Sri Lankan Tamil and diaspora communities, as well as ongoing engagement with community members, cultural practitioners and subject-matter contributors.

We are not affiliated with any political party, government body or religious institution. Our editorial decisions are made independently, guided by our commitment to cultural accuracy, community respect and honest representation.

How Content Is Commissioned

Content on Aana Avanna is commissioned to serve a clear purpose: to help diaspora communities access, understand and preserve Sri Lankan Tamil culture and heritage.

Topics are selected based on:

• Questions and gaps identified within the community
• Cultural events, ceremonies and traditions that are underexplained or at risk of being lost
• Requests and contributions from community members, vendors and cultural partners
• Seasonal and ceremonial relevance

We do not publish sponsored editorial content. Commercial relationships with vendors are kept separate from our archive and guide content.

How Content Is Researched

Our content is grounded in a combination of:

• Lived experience — many of our guides are written by or in consultation with people who have direct personal experience of the traditions, ceremonies and practices described.
• Community knowledge — we draw on conversations with elders, practitioners, community organisations and cultural contributors.
• Published sources — where relevant, we reference academic texts, historical records and reputable cultural documentation. We name our sources. Where we draw on secondary sources, we aim to trace claims back to their origin.
• Regional and denominational awareness — we acknowledge that Tamil and Sri Lankan communities are diverse in faith, region, caste background and family practice. We aim to reflect this diversity rather than present a single authoritative version of any tradition.

We do not rely on unverified social media claims, anonymous sources or AI-generated content as primary evidence. Where a topic is contested, regionally variable or subject to differing interpretations, we say so clearly within the content.

Representing Identity

Tamil and Sri Lankan identities are diverse. We do not treat any single regional, religious, caste or national community as the default representative of the whole. We distinguish between Sri Lankan Tamils, Indian Tamils, Malaiyaha Tamils and other communities where the distinction matters. We do not impose ethnic or religious labels on communities that identify differently.

Many Sri Lankan Muslims use Tamil in everyday and community life while identifying ethnically as Moor or Muslim rather than Tamil. We respect those distinctions and do not flatten them.

Religious and Cultural Sensitivity

We cover Hindu, Christian, Muslim and secular Tamil perspectives. We aim to represent each tradition on its own terms rather than through the assumptions of another. We distinguish between religious practice, cultural custom and folk belief, and we explain those distinctions where they are relevant.

Where content touches on sensitive topics — including religion, caste, trauma or political history — we approach these with care and acknowledge complexity rather than oversimplifying.

How Content Is Written

All content is written in plain, accessible English. We aim to be informative without being academic, and respectful without being sanitised.

We do not sensationalise cultural practices or present them as exotic. We write for readers who are part of these communities — people who may be reconnecting with their heritage, raising children between cultures or simply looking for reliable information about their own traditions.

How Content Is Reviewed

Before publication, content is reviewed for:

• Cultural accuracy — does it reflect the tradition or practice fairly and correctly?
• Tone and respect — does it treat the subject and community with appropriate care?
• Clarity — is it accessible to readers with varying levels of familiarity with the topic?
• Balance — where multiple perspectives exist, are they acknowledged?

For topics involving religious practice, historical events or community-specific customs, we seek input from community members with relevant knowledge or lived experience before publishing.

How Content Is Updated

Cultural understanding evolves. Community feedback matters. We are committed to keeping our content accurate and current.

We review and update content when:

• A factual error is identified
• Community feedback indicates a significant omission or misrepresentation
• New information or scholarship becomes available
• The cultural or social context of a topic changes

Significant updates are noted within the article. We do not silently rewrite content in ways that change its meaning without acknowledgement.

Corrections

We correct errors promptly and transparently. Minor corrections (spelling, grammar, formatting) are made without notation. Factual corrections or substantive changes to meaning are noted at the top or bottom of the relevant article with a brief explanation of what was changed and when.

Independence and Conflicts of Interest

Aana Avanna's editorial content is independent of its commercial activity. Vendors and partners featured in our marketplace do not receive preferential editorial coverage as a result of their commercial relationship with us. Vendor features, product listings and sponsored content are clearly identified as such and do not influence the editorial positions taken in our cultural and heritage articles.

Where a contributor has a personal or professional connection to a topic they have written about, this is disclosed within the content.
