About the Editor

Aana Avanna was built by a member of the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora in the United Kingdom — someone who grew up between two worlds and spent years looking for a place that held both of them with care.

This platform exists because that place did not yet exist in the way it needed to. Not a nostalgia project. Not a tourism brochure. Something more honest than that: a space where heritage is treated as living, complex, and worth preserving — and where the people who carry it can find things made for them, stories that reflect them, and a community that takes their culture seriously.

Why Aana Avanna Exists

The name comes from the first two letters of the Tamil alphabet — அ (a) and ஆ (aa). Together they represent a beginning: the foundation from which everything else is built. The platform takes its name from that idea — a starting point for culture, memory, and community.

It is also a marketplace. The editorial and the commercial are not in conflict here — they are part of the same project. Supporting artisans, vendors, and makers from the community is an act of cultural preservation, not just commerce.

Editorial Approach

Content on Aana Avanna is researched, sourced, and written with care. Where I have knowledge, I use it. Where I do not, I find people who do — community members, scholars, practitioners, and elders whose expertise I try to represent faithfully and credit properly.

I approach cultural and historical topics as a curious, committed outsider to academic authority but an insider to community experience. That position has limits, and I try to be honest about them. I do not write as a neutral observer — I write as someone who cares about this culture and wants to represent it well.

What I Am and Am Not Claiming

I am not a historian, anthropologist, religious scholar, or legal expert. I am not a spokesperson for any community, organisation, or political position. I am an editor and a member of the diaspora who has done the work of building this platform with sincerity and rigour.

Where articles touch on specialist knowledge — history, religion, medicine, law — I draw on credible sources and note their limitations. I welcome correction from those with deeper expertise. The goal is always accuracy and respect, not authority.
