The Story
In the Tamil alphabet, Aana (அ) and Aavanna (ஆ) are the first two letters.
They mark the beginning of words, learning and understanding.
For us, they stand for something deeper:
- the start of a journey back to our roots
- the foundation of identity, memory and culture
- the first step in passing down what we hold dear
Aana Avanna was created for Sri Lankan Tamil and diaspora communities — for those who grew up between two worlds, carrying the language, food, stories, customs and memories of home while building a life elsewhere.
Many of us inherit culture in fragments: a recipe from an elder, a saree folded away for weddings, a song played at family gatherings, a ceremony we attended but never fully understood, a story our parents told once and never repeated.
Aana Avanna exists to bring those fragments together.
It is a marketplace, a Living Archive and a community space built to help people shop the culture, learn the culture and preserve the culture.

Our Purpose
Aana Avanna is not being built simply to sell products.
It is being built to create a bridge between vendors, makers, families, storytellers and the wider diaspora.
Our aim is to make Sri Lankan Tamil culture easier to access, understand and pass on — especially for younger generations who may feel connected to their roots but unsure where to begin.
Through products, recipes, cultural guides, ceremony explanations, community stories and archive-style content, we hope to create a space that feels useful, beautiful and meaningful.
Aana Avanna is for anyone who wants to reconnect, remember, learn or carry heritage forward with care.

The Pillars of Our Heritage
Our work is built around four core spaces that shape Tamil life, memory and the home.
The Kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of many Tamil households.
It is where tradition is stirred, roasted, simmered and shared.
From the ammikkal, the traditional stone grinder used to turn grains and spices into rich pastes and powders, to clay pots, curry leaves, roasted spices and handwritten family recipes, every tool and flavour carries memory.
We celebrate the foods, ingredients, techniques and recipes that have travelled across oceans yet still taste of home.
The Loom
The loom represents craft, patience and identity.
Across Sri Lanka and South Asia, generations of makers have turned thread into story through handloom, embroidery, sarees, veshtis, textiles and traditional patterns.
These are not just fabrics. They are worn at weddings, gifted at ceremonies, folded into cupboards, passed between generations and remembered in photographs.
Aana Avanna aims to honour the makers, designers and artisans who keep these crafts alive while reimagining them for modern homes and lives.
The Spirit
The spirit of a culture is found in the rituals, celebrations, objects and customs that give meaning to daily life.
From Pongal and Deepavali to weddings, puberty ceremonies, first birthdays, remembrance practices, prayer spaces, lamps, kolams, flowers and family gatherings, these traditions carry beauty, belonging and memory.
We recognise that Sri Lankan Tamil and diaspora communities are diverse in faith, belief, region and family practice. Aana Avanna approaches these traditions with respect, curiosity and care, without claiming that one version represents every household.
The Archive
The Living Archive is at the heart of Aana Avanna.
It is our way of documenting, preserving and sharing the history, art, recipes, crafts, stories and everyday memories of Sri Lankan Tamil and diaspora life.
Too many stories risk being lost over time. Too many traditions are practised without explanation. Too many younger people know that something matters, but not always why.
The Living Archive is being built to help close that gap.
It is a growing collection for those who want to explore, learn, contribute and remember.

We are not affiliated with any political party, political movement or government organisation.
Our purpose is cultural preservation, community connection, storytelling, education and ethical commerce.
We believe in the dignity, creativity and resilience of our people, and our hope is to build something that supports the betterment of our communities in the UK, Sri Lanka and across the diaspora.

Rooted in Heritage, Open to Growth
Aana Avanna is rooted in Tamil and Sri Lankan diaspora culture.
Our first collections and archive content will focus primarily on Tamil, Sri Lankan and diaspora-led products, stories and traditions.
As the platform grows, we aim to welcome selected South Asian and heritage-led makers, designers and community partners whose work reflects quality, cultural respect and meaningful storytelling.
Our roots are clear, but our vision has room to grow.
