For many Sri Lankans, the smell of coriander seeds simmering on the stove means somebody in the house is unwell.
A cup may appear after the first sneeze, following a rainy journey home or when someone complains of body aches and tiredness. It is often prepared by a parent or grandparent before anybody has decided whether the illness is actually a cold.
The recipe varies.
Some families make it with coriander seeds alone. Others add ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, garlic, venivelgeta or a piece of jaggery to soften the slightly bitter taste.
What remains consistent is the role it plays: warmth, care and the belief that the body needs support at the beginning of an illness.
Koththamalli has been recorded in Sri Lankan ethnobotanical research as an infusion traditionally used for conditions including colds, fever, cough, body pain and asthma. This documents how communities use it; it does not, by itself, prove that the remedy medically treats those conditions.
What exactly is koththamalli?
Koththamalli is the Tamil and Sinhala name commonly used for coriander.
The drink is usually made from the dried fruits of the plant, which are normally called coriander seeds in cooking.
Coriander’s botanical name is Coriandrum sativum. The fresh leaves are also edible, but they are chemically and aromatically different from the dried seeds used for this remedy.
Coriander seeds contain a volatile oil made up largely of linalool, the compound responsible for much of their characteristic aroma. They also contain other plant compounds that have attracted research interest.
However, identifying interesting compounds inside a plant is only the first step.
It does not automatically prove that boiling the seeds in a kitchen produces a drink capable of treating disease.
Does koththamalli actually work for a cold?
The honest answer
Koththamalli may help someone feel comforted and hydrated, but there is no good clinical evidence that coriander-seed water cures or shortens the common cold.
The common cold is caused by viruses. Most people begin to improve within one to two weeks, whether they drink koththamalli or not. Rest, adequate fluids and symptom relief are the main forms of self-care. Antibiotics do not treat ordinary colds because antibiotics work against bacteria rather than viruses.
Scientific reviews of coriander describe antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects found in laboratory, animal and limited clinical research. However, relatively few good human clinical trials exist, and research has not established coriander tea as a treatment for viral respiratory infections.
The correct conclusion is therefore:
Koththamalli is a traditional supportive drink that may provide warmth, fluid and temporary comfort, but coriander has not been clinically proven to cure a cold.
What benefits are reasonably supported?
It provides fluid
People with a temperature, sore throat or reduced appetite may drink less than usual.
A warm coriander drink contributes to daily fluid intake. Staying hydrated helps prevent symptoms such as thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, tiredness, dark urine and reduced urination.
This is a genuine benefit, but it is not unique to coriander.
Water, soup, tea and other suitable drinks can also provide hydration.
Warmth may soothe the throat
A warm—not scalding—drink may temporarily feel soothing when the throat is dry or irritated.
The benefit comes partly from temperature, moisture and the act of sipping. It should not be mistaken for evidence that the coriander is killing the infection.
It may be easier to tolerate than food
When someone feels unwell and has little appetite, a lightly flavoured warm drink may be easier to consume than a full meal.
If the person is vomiting or has significant diarrhoea, however, koththamalli should not replace oral rehydration solution.
The ritual itself may be comforting
A familiar drink can provide reassurance, especially when it is connected to childhood, home and family care.
That comfort is real, even though it is difficult to measure in a clinical trial.
A remedy does not need to cure a virus to have cultural and emotional value.
What does the science say about coriander?
Coriander has been investigated for a broad range of possible biological effects.
Laboratory and animal studies have reported:

These findings are scientifically interesting, but they are frequently misunderstood.
An extract that affects bacteria in a laboratory dish is not automatically capable of treating an infection inside the human body. The concentration used in laboratory research may be far greater than anything found in a household drink.
Similarly, an anti-inflammatory effect in a rat does not establish that coriander tea reduces cold symptoms in people.
Reviews of coriander repeatedly note its traditional uses and pharmacological potential, while also showing that much of the evidence comes from laboratory or animal research rather than robust human trials.
What about the Sri Lankan “immune” study?
A 2020 Sri Lankan study investigated a traditional mixture made from:

Coscinium fenestratum, known as venivelgeta in Sinhala and maramanjal in Tamil
Researchers found anti-inflammatory and immunological effects in rats and rat-derived cells.
The mixture reduced experimentally induced swelling in rats and affected several laboratory markers associated with inflammation and immune activity.
This study is relevant because it scientifically examined a recognisable Sri Lankan preparation.
However, it did not prove that:

Plain coriander water cures a cold

The mixture prevents viral infections

It shortens illness in humans

It treats flu or COVID-19

Drinking it daily “boosts immunity”

More concentrated preparations work better
The study used a coriander-and-venivelgeta mixture, not an ordinary cup of coriander water. It was conducted in rats and laboratory cells, not people suffering from colds.
Animal studies are useful for deciding what deserves further research. They are not clinical proof of effectiveness in humans.
Does koththamalli “boost immunity”?
“Boosts immunity” is one of the most overused phrases in health marketing.
The immune system is not a battery that can simply be charged by one drink.
A healthy immune response depends on many factors, including:

Previous exposure to infections
Some coriander compounds may influence immune or inflammatory pathways under experimental conditions. That is not the same as proving that a cup of koththamalli makes someone resistant to infection.
The responsible wording is:
Coriander contains compounds being studied for anti-inflammatory and immunological activity, but ordinary koththamalli has not been proven to strengthen immunity or prevent respiratory infections.
What do the additional ingredients contribute?
Ginger
Many families add fresh or dried ginger.
Ginger has separate clinical evidence for reducing certain forms of nausea, particularly pregnancy-related nausea. That does not prove that ginger cures a cold or makes koththamalli antiviral.
It may add warmth and make the drink more aromatic.
Very strong ginger can worsen heartburn, diarrhoea or stomach irritation.
Honey
Honey may be added after the drink has cooled slightly.
It may soothe an irritated throat, and warm lemon-and-honey drinks are included in NHS self-care advice for colds. Honey must never be given to a baby under 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism.
Honey adds free sugar and is optional.
Black pepper
Pepper adds warmth and sharpness but has not been proven to shorten a cold.
Too much may irritate a sore throat, upset the stomach or aggravate acid reflux.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon adds aroma and flavour.
There is no good evidence that the amount used in a household drink cures respiratory infections.
Garlic
Garlic is sometimes added because of its reputation for fighting infection.
The NHS notes that there is little evidence that supplements such as garlic prevent colds or help people recover more quickly.
Jaggery or sugar
Sweetening may make the drink easier to tolerate, but it does not improve its medicinal effectiveness.
People managing diabetes should account for added sugar according to their usual dietary and medication guidance.
A simple koththamalli recipe
This is a gentle household version rather than a medically established dose.
Ingredients

1 tablespoon of whole coriander seeds

500 millilitres of water

3–4 thin slices of fresh ginger, optional

A small piece of cinnamon, optional

Honey or jaggery, optional
Method

Check the coriander seeds and remove any stones, dust or damaged material.

Rinse the seeds briefly in clean water.
-
Lightly crush them using a mortar and pestle or the back of a spoon.
-
Place the coriander seeds and water in a saucepan.
-
Add ginger or cinnamon if using.
-
Bring the water to a gentle boil.
-
Reduce the heat and simmer for approximately 10–15 minutes.
-
Strain the drink into a cup.
-
Allow it to cool until comfortably warm.
-
Add a small amount of honey or jaggery if desired.
Sip it slowly.
There is no clinically established dose for koththamalli. More seeds and longer boiling do not automatically produce a more effective remedy.
An extremely concentrated decoction may increase the risk of stomach irritation or diarrhoea without providing any proven additional benefit.
Should the coriander seeds be roasted?
Some families dry-roast the seeds before boiling them. Others place them directly into the water.
Roasting changes the aroma and flavour and may make the drink taste deeper or less raw.
There is no good evidence that roasting coriander seeds makes koththamalli more effective against a cold.
Both methods can be preserved as legitimate family variations rather than presented as medically superior versions.
How often can it be drunk?
There is no scientifically validated schedule for koththamalli.
For most healthy adults, an occasional cup made with ordinary food quantities is unlikely to be concerning. Coriander is widely consumed as a culinary ingredient and is generally recognised as safe when used as food.
That does not mean concentrated extracts or repeated medicinal-strength decoctions are automatically safe.
A single published report described severe diarrhoea and abdominal pain in a breastfeeding woman who consumed a strong coriander extract daily for seven days. A single case cannot establish that ordinary koththamalli causes the same problem, but it illustrates why concentrated herbal preparations should not be treated like harmless water.

Can children drink koththamalli?
A weak, food-style preparation may be tolerated by some older children, but herbal drinks are not necessary for treating a child’s cold.
Important precautions include:

Do not force a child to drink it.

Continue offering normal fluids.
-
Do not add honey for a child under 12 months.
-
Do not use koththamalli instead of appropriate medical care.

Avoid very concentrated mixtures and large quantities of pepper or ginger.

Seek advice if a baby or young child appears unusually unwell.
A child who is struggling to breathe, difficult to wake, not drinking, passing much less urine or becoming blue or grey around the lips needs urgent medical assessment.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Coriander used in ordinary cooking is different from a strong herbal decoction or supplement.
Reliable safety data for concentrated coriander preparations during pregnancy are limited. General medical guidance advises caution with botanical supplements during pregnancy because many products have not been adequately studied.
During pregnancy or breastfeeding:

Keep coriander at ordinary food-style amounts.

Avoid highly concentrated extracts unless advised by a qualified professional.

Check mixtures containing several herbs, because each ingredient has its own risks.

Do not assume that a traditional product is safe simply because it is natural.

Speak to a pharmacist, midwife or doctor when taking regular medicine or experiencing significant symptoms.
Coriander has sometimes been promoted as a way to increase breast-milk supply, but LactMed reports that scientifically valid clinical trials do not support this use.
Coriander allergy
Allergy to coriander is uncommon, but genuine reactions—including anaphylaxis—have been reported.
Someone who has previously reacted to coriander leaves, coriander seeds or products containing coriander should not use this remedy without medical advice.

Disliking the taste of coriander is not the same as being allergic to it.

It is a supportive drink—not a diagnosis, vaccine, antiviral medicine or substitute for medical treatment.
Cold, flu or something more serious?
Cold symptoms usually develop gradually over two or three days and commonly include:

Mild aches
Flu tends to begin more suddenly and usually makes a person feel considerably more exhausted and unwell.
Koththamalli cannot reliably distinguish between a cold, flu, COVID-19, pneumonia, asthma or another respiratory condition.
The person’s overall condition matters more than whether the drink appears to help.
When to seek medical advice
Speak to a pharmacist or GP when:

Symptoms are worsening rather than improving

A high temperature lasts more than three days

Cold symptoms have not improved after around 10 days

A cough lasts longer than three weeks

The person repeatedly becomes unwell

The person has diabetes or a long-term heart, lung or kidney condition

The person has a weakened immune system

A parent or carer is worried about a child’s symptoms
Seek urgent medical help when:

The person is confused or difficult to wake

Tradition and science: the final verdict
Koththamalli occupies an important place in Sri Lankan household culture.
It is not foolish or meaningless simply because clinical trials have not proven it to be a cold medicine.
